London Calling: Clare Lydon

clare-lydonClare Lydon is a London-based author who’s just released her debut novel, London Calling. A tale of one woman’s search for love in modern-day London, it’s littered with ladygays, a vat of tequila and a colourful array of Converse. We put some questions to Clare about her new novel and writing…

Your new novel is based in London. Do you live there?
Strictly speaking I’m an Essex girl but I moved to London in 1998 and have no plans to leave. I’ve lived in Bethnal Green and Stoke Newington – lesbian central – but now I’m based in glorious Greenwich.

london-calling-coverWhat’s the story?
London Calling is about Jess, who’s just been dumped and moves back from Sydney to London. It’s the story of her putting her life back together, getting a job, a new flat & finding new love with no shortage of hiccups along the way. Does she find her happy ever after? Read the book and find out…

Who’s your favourite character?
Difficult to say, but it’s a toss-up between Jess, Kate & Lucy. I love Jess despite her flaws, whereas Lucy & Kate are far more sorted. If push came to shove I’d sleep with Kate though.

What inspired you to write London Calling?
I’m a fan of lesbian fiction but most of the books I’ve previously read were set in America, written by Americans. I’ve lost count of the amount of mid-west lesbian love stories I’ve read! So I decided it was about time London was represented and put finger to keyboard.

How long did it take?
I’ve started and stopped writing this novel many times over the past four years, but last year I put on my serious game face and finished my first edit. Then it was a case of getting feedback and editing like a ninja. What I learned in the edit process was that I write the word ‘arse’ a lot. I’m arse-obsessed, clearly. My 'find and replace' took hour!

What are you reading at the moment?
I’ve just finished Jade Winters’ Guilty Hearts, another UK-based lesbian author, which was ace. I’ve also got the most recent Bridget Jones on my Kindle to read. I’m a fan of chicklit which is why I write lesbian chicklit.

Is there another novel in the works?
Yes there is and I’m hoping it’ll be out within the next six months. It’s not a sequel to London Calling but that could happen too!

If you could be the love child of any two authors, who would you choose?
JoJo Moyes and Jeanette Winterson. With Armistead Maupin as my godfather.

Clare Lydon’s debut novel London Calling is out on Kindle on 28 February 2014, with other digital versions following soon. The paperback version will be out at the end of April. Find out more at
