Zürich: Sports and fun for every taste

If you enjoy sports and are looking for a kick, then Zürich is the right place to be.

For example, head for the hills. Uetliberg is Zürich’s very own mountain ridge, reaching 870m at its highest. There are a number of hiking trails and all of them have jaw-dropping views of the city, the distant Alps and the curving Zürichsee. Or, rather splendidly, you can get up the Uetliberg by train.

If water, rather than hills, floats your boat, then Zürich’s river and lake await you. With around 40 facilities, the city of Zürich offers the highest swimming facility in the world. Of these, 18 lake, river and open-air swimming area invite guests to cool down under the open sky. Why not try wakeboarding at several clubs around the water – the Wakeboard Academy, near Wollishofen, does beginner’s lessons. For something more sedate, hire your own paddle boat and try to avoid the steamships ploughing their way up the lake. Start the evening with a sunset mini-cruise on one of these steamships and later glide back to have dinner right at the water’s edge. After dusk, a number of swimming facilities transform themselves into bars, stages and cinemas.

Explore the city on wheels

Everything is possible in Zürich. There are cities in the world where several thousand people gathering spontaneously together to take over the streets would attract the attention of the riot police. In Zürich, however, the huge Monday-night in-line skating get-together, held during the summer months, has become an institution. Join in, try not to fall over and make friends if you do.

The Züri rollt free rental bikes are another great way to discover Zürich. The bikes are available from five locations: Oerlikon-Swissôtel, the Opera House, Bahnhof Enge, the Globus department store and all-year round from the Velogate in the central train station. Hop on and explore the old winding streets of Zürich on wheels.

A very different kind of experience is the Masoala Indoor Rainforest at the world-class Zürich Zoo. A humid slice of Madagascan jungle has been created in a massive 10,000 sq m ecosystem. It defies any wintry weather outside. Enjoy a cool place on a cold day.
