TRAVEL>> Going AWOL in Amsterdam
You can be sure of a good time in Amsterdam, Europe’s most tolerant city. Somewhat lacking on the lesbian front, however, girls keen on the scene will be hard pressed to keep up with the endless fortnightly and monthly dyke nights that are badly advertised throughout the city. You could try visiting Sappho (www.sappho.nl), a relatively new lesbian café bar located on Vijzelstraat. A good starting point for locating some of the harder to find events and venues, the café hosts music nights, art exhibitions and late night drinks. A new monthly afternoon party takes place at Kamer on Marnixstraat, the opening night playing host to a mixed lesbian crowd and friendly banter. The problem of being on the feminine side of the coin is that once you’ve spent hours gazing at your map in a stoned haze trying to find the right street (straat) and traipsed all the way there, only to be turned down for want of something butcher. De Trut (The Cunt) on Bilderdijkstraat is one such example, which appears to have a strict policy regarding length of hair, skirt and choice of make-up. A weekly ladies night running from 10.30pm every Sunday, I would advise you to don your cap and boots and wink rudely at the bouncer if you want any hope of getting in.

Failing that, there are a few boy bars on Reguliersdwarsstraat, notably ARC, which despite being full of men, is reasonably fun and friendly for the lost lesbian around town, looking for a taste of home in the familiar chemical smile, high camp and dreadful sound track that pervades every gay bar in the whole of the world.

It might not be Lesbos, but it’s a great place to get away for the weekend. Go for the beautiful scenery, the clean air, the wonderfully open nature of its famous sleazy Red Light district, and of course, the coffee shop on every corner, which will provide you with a plethora of different types of cannabis, where you may sit back and relax, taking in the beautiful sights of the city.

Hire a bike and get out to Vondelpark, a peaceful alternative to the bustling city centre, where you can appreciate the wildlife, grab an ice cream and catch some rays. Explore the beautiful Jordaan district, bursting with bookshops, traditional Dutch Brown bars and gorgeous canal-barge restaurants. Go to a Peep show. See some straight sex. Sit in a porn cinema and watch the men get their kicks. Hire yourself a prostitute. Eat some magic mushrooms. Fall off your bike. But if it's sweaty homo parties and hot gay women you're after on your jollies, perhaps wait until Amsterdam's Gay and Lesbian Pride, taking place in August (www.amsterdampride.nl).
